Food & Drinks
Fairbanks is not exactly the most convenient city, but we have plenty of dive bars and Thai restaurants around! You can walk to some of them, but expect to have to use a car or bus.
- Check out the Red Fox, Oasis Lounge (good burgers), UAF Pub (Karaoke on Thursday evenings), or the Golden Eagle if you feel like driving 15 minutes out of town.
Interesting Spots
- Large Animal Research Station (LARS): Live muskoxen, bison, and caribou. Car needed, but worth checking out.
- Creamer’s Field: Birds usually present, nice path to walk in the woods and not be in immediate collision danger with mad skiers. Dogs on leash. Leave the birds alone. Needs a car/bus. 1-hour walking distance from the GI.
- Museum of the North: 5-minute walk from the GI (Geophysical Institute). Very good museum, unbeatable view on the Alaska Range, good coffee, and whale skeleton.
- Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum: I know how it sounds, but everybody has been nicely surprised by it. Antique autos, antique clothes, cool recent history of Fairbanks and surroundings from 1900 onwards. Needs a car/bus.
- Chena Hotsprings: About an hour drive out of town is an outdoor hotsprings.
